4 classes that should be mandatory in public schools
4 Classes I think should be Mandatory in Public Schools
1. Consumer Math - Focusing on things like balancing a check book, personal finance, tax system, managing debt and income. All things everyone should know.
2. Home Economics - Focusing on cooking, home care and maintenance and yes - Nutrition.
3. Shop Class - Focusing on how to use basic tools and make general repairs on everyday objects. This may also encourage one to pick up a trade.
4. Physical Ed - Enough said.
Why these things are not mandatory I have no idea. Lets be real, Calculus is a very complicated math but is not a necessity. I have never once used it in my day-to-day life. I think that is something that should be an elective or for someone in a specialized field.
We need to teach some basic and USEFUL life skills. That can be applied well after school is over.
What say you?

You'd THINK these are things parents would teach their children at home.

You'd think. But there is some pretty absentee parents out there. Like sex-ed, I think it would be a good idea to teach some of those life basics in school too. Might be the only place "some" kids are going to get it. Especially women, if the husband has been doing all the finances........like my grandma when I my grandpa passed away........she didn't even know how to use a bank machine or anything. My mom walked her through all the financial stuff. Times are different, I think EVERYBODY should have those basic skills to be self-sufficient and healthy.

In the district I live in, schools are required to have p.e. 5 days a week, and a consumer ed. class is required to graduate. I went 1 step further and made my son take an auto shop class before I would let him get his driver's permit.
