Steve Perry = a racist?
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=137013
The Pulse of Radio reports: Former JOURNEY frontman Steve
Perry is defending himself after a joke by Sara Silverman
allegedly made him out to be a racist. Rolling Stone reported
that in the new issue of Playboy on stands today (March 19) Silverman
says in an interview: "The onetime lead singer of a very popular band
from the 1980s" came backstage after a show and said, "You're my
favorite comedian. You have the best n***er jokes." Although Silverman
didn't come outright and say it was Perry, the button of her
"joke" was: "I'll just say this: "After that, I stopped believin'" —
which appeared to be a poke at the band's classic hit "Don't Stop
Believin'".
Perry, who's a fan of Silverman's
and has met her several times said, "I'm really shocked. She was so
friendly and so nice. I don't understand why she would go there, it's so
bizarre. I don't use that word, are you kidding? That's so derogatory."
He
went on to explain the basis of where he thinks Silverman's
"joke" came from: '"I walked up to her after the show and I said, 'I
can't believe that somehow you seem to be getting away with all these
slurs and the n-word, I just can't believe how you're doing this,' and I
looked at my friend and I said, 'I can't believe how she's getting away
with this,' and she looked at me and kind of smiled. It wasn't like I
was condemning her or condoning her, it was just that I can't believe
how somehow creatively she was making everybody in that club of all
colors and all ethnic backgrounds laugh. That's what it was."
Despite
the fun at his expense, Perry says he remains a fan: "You've
gotta see her show because she uses every ethnic slur known to man that
historically has been very unforgivable. I'm Portuguese, that's the only
ethnic background she left out, but maybe after this article she'll
come after me now."

Nobody cares about a recluse, has been singer whether he used the word "nigger" or not. I find nothing wrong with what she's alleging, anyway. What would be be so wrong with saying what she's saying he said?

I have zero problem's with him saying that if he did. Actually, I think it would be hilarious if Perry recorded a gangsta rap album.

Re: Steve Perry = a racist?
I'm w/the who cares crew!! I don't feel as though I'm racist, but let's face it ...we are ALL racist to a certain extent!! The "N" word was absolutely tabu in our household growing up and now . I am aghast at how often and easily it flows out of the mouths of many of people, especially in the south, and I will never get used to it!! But there is something that I have learned as I'm sure many of you already know ...there is a difference between an African American and a Nigger, there is a difference between a Caucasian American and White Trash ...are we racist?!? :? This is a non issue, IMO!!

Good post, MG ... even though I think the term "African American" makes no sense. I don't run around calling myself "European American." I'm just white. Just like they're black ... or is it brown?

Re: Steve Perry = a racist?
It's funny how it's 2010 and we're still up in arms if someone drops a "nigger" here or a "kike" there.
After all we've been through between WWII and the 60s, people should be laughing at those words. The continued ridiculous reaction in this day and age of affirmative action and uber-political correctness to such words gives them the power that such words do have left.
Also, it doesn't help when a lot of blacks use it on each other all the time.

I grew up in a house where I was told "don't you let me hear you say that word outside this house."
I'll leave you all to figure out the error in parenting in that rule.

There are certain words that should only be used while yelling out of a speeding car.

When I was a kid, not sure if anybody else remember's this........but brazil nuts were called nigger toes. I accidently slipped a few months back when my daughter was eating some mixed nuts. I told her not to eat all the nigger toes and she was like.... Mom!! What are those?! Ooops.

That's the exact example I was thinking of as I type the previous post.
My mom thought it was FUNNY to teach me that! I remember her laughing and telling me not to say that outside the house or in front of company.
I would have been knocked into next week if I said "fuck" at my house but the n-bomb was no problemo. She didn't even seem to mind all that much when I taught one of the neighbor kids about the brazil nuts.
But the funny thing is, if I dropped an n-bomb infront of her now, she would gasp and "full name" me like I was 5 years old again. *gaspwheezeshock!* "Kimberrrllllyyyy!"
