I don't buy gas ..... and that is not as good as it sounds,

As a result of higher fuel prices, my STS (Special Transportation System - I use it because of my oxygen) rates were raised by the county last week.

I now pay $3.00 per trip or $6.00 per day to get back and forth to work. That is $120.00 - $150.00 per month (and does not include tip for the regular decent drivers)

Crying or Very sad

Otherwise, around here it is about $4.15. Twisted Evil

Interestingly there is a bill on the floor of Congress right now called The American Energy Act. It allows for this country to start using and exploring its own resources for the purposes of gathering oil and gas.

Pelosi, however, will not let the bill even hit the floor for a vote before Congress leaves for a 5-week vacation on Friday. I wonder why?

Could it be that no Democrat Representative wants to attach a "yes" vote to it for fear of infuriating the far left, or to attach a "no" vote to it for fear of infuriating the American people (who overwhelmingly want to start drilling) with an election day only 100 days away? Hmmm...

This is your Gov. at work. They are about to take a 5-week vacation while gas prices are through the roof and they won't even bring up a possible solution to a vote before they go!

Exxon Mobil reports this morning a second quarter profit of $11.68 billion. The largest quarterly profit ever by a U.S corporation. It fell short of Wall Streets expectations though. scratch

Awwww, I feel badly for them.

Oh Gawd Girl!!

I was going to post this however, thought I might lose my cool (and , yes, we are cool!!)

So remember, you started it.

Yesterday Exxon announced that their 2nd-quarter profits were less than expected:

second-quarter net income rose 14% to 11.68 billion
second-quarter revenue jumped 40% to $138.1 billion

And yet they still managed to achieve the highest profit ever for a U.S. company (actually, they broke their own record since they were the previous record holder as well)

Royal Dutch Shell Pic (Europe's largest oil producer) reported a 33% gain (11.6 billion)

Chevron Corp (the second-biggest U.S. oil comapny) reporting tomorrow

ConocoPhillips (third larges petroleum produce in the U.S.) second-quarter profit jumped to a record $5.44 billion

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the largest retailer, said same-store sales in June rose 5.8 percent, the biggest increase in four years, as customers spent the rebate money on discounted gasoline and food.

Bureau of Labor and Statistics/Consumer Price Index
was up 1.2% in Jun 2008 for a total of 5.6% since Jun 2007

Consumer prices advanced at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of 7.9 percent in the second quarter after increasing at a 3.1 percent rate in the first three months of 2008.

The index for energy increased at a 29.1 percent

Food-at-home index increased 8.7%, for the first half of 2008, compared to a 5.6 percent increase for all of 2007.

Unemployment

Separate figures today showed that initial claims for unemployment insurance soared to the highest level in more than five years last week. Claims jumped by 44,000 to 448,000, the Labor Department said.

Show of paws, how many of you received a 29.1 percent raise this year?

Ok I am waiting for some fool to theorize that Wal-Mart's profit increase is a result of Journey/Arnel Pineada/Revelations and that Steve Perry has been holding them back for all of these years.

Oh and don't forget - we need to start a fucking telethon for Exxon. Twisted Evil

This is abusive.

As much as we complain about Big Oil's profits, I think the real culprit is your government who takes twice as much in taxes than the profits the oil company makes...Big oil's '07 profits were at 8% - significantly less than other industries in the private sector. If the Gov. is making taking 15%-17% of your dollar at the pump, wouldn't it make infinitely more sense that Gov. lower oil tax?

It's not that their revenues are down - revenues were up as well (tho not as much as expected, allegedly something to do with a worker strike in Nigeria)

Their profits were up by 14% - that is 6% above 2007

I cannot solve the economics of this country - and they certainly won't be resolved on this board.

However, I must take a stance on how we treat each other in this country.

Salary increases are a thing of the past; in many areas JOBS are a thing of the past.

We need to stop hiding behind the excuses of "the government done me wrong "(because they just don't care) pull ourselves up by the boot straps, and start being kind to each other from the bottom all the way up to the consideration of shareholder profit (please do not bother to explain to me that "if there were no shareholders," blah, blah)

I was the asst director of the Center for the Study of Mergers and Acquisitions at a major University - and directed 2 world-wide conferences each year - one on tax aspects of M&A and one of corporate aspects of M&A.

Believe me, employee status, standard of living, living wage is not even a consideration in most companies.

It is in some and they do quite well by investing in their workers instead of golden parachutes (yes, golden parachutes do need to exist in order to attract good executive officers; however, they do not need to be larger than some countries when deployed)

My neighbor, lost his job last week - his company filed for bancruptcy - and of course, the employees had no clue - just showed up for work one morning and it was gone. Of course, the company was late on issuing paychecks already, and there will be none in the future.

Employees have no recourse except to file a claim in the Federeal Bancruptcy Court - and again employee wages are the last consideration. It takes forever, and he already cannot pay his rent this month.

My gripe is not that business cannot make a profit. They have to in order for any economy to continue.

My gripe is must the margin be so vast? The employees have not been getting raises recently and everything is going up.

We need to work together.

There was a study done at one of the IVY League universities a couple of years ago.

It showed that if the remaining (those that made it to the water successfully) life boats on the Titanic had been lashed together, the total floating area would have been increased to room enough to take aboard all of the people in the water.

Food for thought.

OK waiting for Frank on this one!!
